Craters are formed when a heavy object strikes the surface of the earth with a considerable velocity, it forms a depression in the surface of the earth. Craters can be formed by heavy meteorites. Mostly the meteorites that try to reach the surface of the earth are burned in the atmosphere due to friction. However, some very large meteorites reach the surface of the earth and may form craters.

These craters can also be formed by volcanic eruptions or even by a powerful bomb(atom bomb). Craters are also observed on the surface of the moon. These can also be found on the surface of planets like Mercury and Venus. Sometimes, when water gets accumulated into these, a crater lake is formed.
