When phenolphthalein is added to NaOH solution, the solution turns pink. This is because-

  • In the presence of a basic solution, the colour of phenolphthalein changes to pink color. As sodium hydroxide solution is basic, the addition of phenolphthalein to the solution form phenolphthalein ions which is pink in colour and hence, the solution turns pink.
  • Phenolphthalein is a synthetic indicator that is used in acid-base titrations. In acidic solution, it turns colourless while in neutral solution it turns light pink.
