The answer is called tectonic shift.

The earth's surface is in the form of plates called tectonic plates.

There are seven major plates forming the seven continents.

Tectonic shift

-The movement of the plates causes earthquakes and volcanoes.

- There are four types of movement

1. Collision- occurs when the moving two plates collide with each other usually resulting in mountains.

2. Subduction - is the movement of one plate moves below the other and it sinks down.

3. Spreading - is the movement of the two plates away from each other.

4. Transform faulting - is the movement of the plates, where the two plates slide past one another.
