When the stone is thrown vertically upwards its velocity decreasing. Why?

due to gravity it experiences an downward acceleration which causes loss of upward velocity.

The stone thrown vertically upwards experiences the force of gravity in the opposite direction, which cause retardation and hence the velocity decrease.
Another reason can be air resistance but it is so small that it can be neglected as well
