Here is the answer.
Whenever there is a force of attraction the acceleration will always be there and it is considered to be negative by convention.
For example when positive and negative charge are at some distance there is force of attraction and force is give as negative due to opposite charges and hence acceleration is negative as - F= - ma and mass can't be negative.
