when two spring balances joined at their free ends and when pulled apart, both show the same reading because of newton's third law of motion.

For understanding this question u have to know first what is third law of motion.

Third law of motion states that "When one object applies a force on another object, the second object instantaneously applies a force back on the one".

so, when we pull apart the first exert a force on another then second object applies equal force on the one.
