Here is your answer.

An ohmmeter actually measures the amount of current that flows through the load being measured when a known voltage (the battery inside the meter).  Ohm’s Law states that the amount of current in a circuit is inversely proportional to the resistance in the circuit.  The accuracy of the resistance measurement depends on the steady, known voltage from the meter being the only voltage in the circuit.  In an energized circuit, there will already be a potential across the component and the resistance reading will not be correct.

 Also, being a lower resistance path, the ohmmeter can be damaged by acting as a short.
