When viewing through a compound microscope, our eyes should be positioned not on the eyepiece but a short distance away from it for best viewing. Why? How much should be that short distance between the eye and eyepiece?

Answer:

The image of objective lens in eye is too close to the eye piece , field of view reduced and the eyes cannot collect much of the light .

Hence the precise location of the eye ring would depend upon the seperation between the objective and eye piece , and also on the focal length of the eye piece .
