Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji was martyred by Jahangir on 30th May 1606.

  • Guru Arjan played a significant role in the history of Sikhism. He led the foundation of the Golden temple. He was also credited for the completion of Nectar Sarovar.
  • Upon his growing popularity amongst the population including many Muslim followers Jahangir summoned him and urged to embrace Islam to death. The former denied to accept it and preferred Martyrdom.
  • It was said that this martyrdom is no parallel to any barbaric event, he was made to sit on a red hot iron plate, hot red sand poured over his body and head, starved to death and finally took for a bath in the river from where he never raised out.
  • People with personal rivalry, religious motives of Brahmins, political reasons are some of the other mentioned factors by the historians supporting the martyrdom.
