In the year 1857 when greased cartridges were introduced in India. the cartridges were first had to be bitten by the teeth and then insert in the rifles. a rumour spread that the cartridges were greased by cow and pig fat. both Hindu and Muslim soldiers refused it when Mangal pandey was forced he killed two officers and he was hanged for this act of his and his death brought a new revolt in Meerut where he lived against British.
