When water is the largest resource, why can so little of it be used for drinking and agriculture?

water covers a large surface are of our planet. but all the water that is present cannot be bought into useable form because its salty water and is different from the water which we use abd therfore cannot be bought in daily use.

water is plenty but the fresh water found is less...........
the common water found in seas and oceans are very salty ...making them into fresh is a costlier and time taking process.....so we should use the water in rivers and lakes .........but we have contaminated soo many rivers ,making useless fro human consumption or use.................
