According to research, computer eye problems are quite common. Around 90 per cent of the people who work on computer screens have at least some symptoms of eye trouble. A survey of optometrists in the US indicated that 10 million eye examinations are annually given in that country primarily because of visual problems related to computer use. Given the huge increase in computer and mobile use happening in our country as well, this is bound to affect us also.

Eye surgeon Dr Himanshu Mehta explains, “With increased use of computers in air-conditioned rooms at a stretch, when you are concentrating on writing, or even when kids are playing computer games, you blink less. Normally blinking three to four times a minute is necessary. It’s like a wiper cleaning your car windshield. When you don’t blink properly, the tear film, which allows us to see clearly, gets affected. Because of that, your vision gets fuzzy and you might experience itching, burning, redness of eyes, fatigue, heaviness of eyes and eye strain.”
Symptoms of CVS

Headaches
Neck pain
Blurred vision
Eye strain
Irritation
Redness of eyes

Why does CVS occur

Due to constant focus on computer for uninterrupted periods of time or long hours.

How to combat CVS

-Make a conscious effort to blink more while working on computer.

-Avoid sitting in front of an air conditioner or near its air draft while working on computer. Don’t let the air-conditioning blow onto your eyes or nose.

-Take breaks when you are sitting and working on computer at a stretch. Every hour stand and stretch, or run some errand.

-Change postures.

-Monitor should be placed about 2-3 feet from the eyes (or at the farthest comfortable distance).

-Use the correct or prescribed glasses.

-Reduce contrast of the computer.

-Every half an hour, close your eyes for 1-2 minutes to give them rest.

-Do not gaze constantly at the monitor for a long time. Take your eyes off the screen every 5-10 minutes.

-Use eye-wetting drops, if required.

-Do not use antibiotic or steroid eye drop without supervision of an expert eye specialist.

Convergence exercises

Regular eye exercise can help prevent the problems caused by working on computers or even heavy reading or writing work. These exercises are advised for all computer professionals, students and office workers.

Sit on a chair upright and look at a far-off small object.

Hold out a pen at level with your eyes at an arm’s length and look at its tip.
Gradually bring the pen close to your eyes to a point where you feel a mild strain on your eyes. The tip of the pen should remain clear and single in appearance.

Hold the pen in this position for about half a minute and then again gradually take it back to an arm length.

Hold it here again for about half a minute, and then again bring the pen close to your eyes.

Repeat above step 10 times and then again look the far off small object.
