You use algorithm when you have to find some value. eg we use Euclid's algorithm to find HCF.
Lemmas are small established or assumed truths. They are used to establish Theorems.

It depends on the Theorem you are going to prove. Mathematics is sometimes confusing. That is the beauty of Mathematics my teacher used to say.
