When we throw a ball up in the air ,gravity pulls it down so in this does friction works ?

No, friction works only when 2 surfaces are in contact with each other. Gravitational force is non-contact force whereas friction is a contact force.

tony47: you're ignoring the friction between the ball and the air surrounding it
Isabella6: Friction between the ball & the air will only work when the speed of the ball is high. In this case it is negligible.
