Explanation:

For most people, “Oh my god!” simply means “I don’t know what to say! I’m speechless! I’m so surprised/ shocked/ amazed.”

This isn’t unique to English. In Romance Languages, for example, speakers will exclaim “Dios mío” or “Mon Dieu” to express surprise.

I don’t know the origin of the expression, but I’m guessing it’s something along the lines of “God help me” (because what I’m hearing is distressing to me, or I don’t know how to cope with it), or maybe “God only knows what you’re talking about.” People invoke the name of God for protection, courage, or help in moments of emotional confusion or

Is saying "Oh my God" using the Lord's name in vain?

I don’t know if this is accurate or not but I have heard through legend and possibly religious propaganda from the old days, that there are times when the human body could be entered by demons.

Why do Americans say "Oh My God" all the time?

Many American's no longer worry about breaking one of the 10 commandments any more, about not using the Lords name in vain. In my thoughts that is what I hear when I hear that statement, its very disruptive to my thoughts anytime some one says that in conversations. I also will turn off or leave movies that use the phrase frequently.

In a professional work training meeting some years ago, I had to ask one if the presenters to please reduse his use of that phrase, as every time he said it I would loose my concentration on the material he was presenting.

>> Is the expression [OMG] a blasphemy? Why?

Yes it is. I hate hearing it. It cuts deep into my soul to hear it. My children are not permitted to say it (nor do they even want to either.)

It certainly is using God's name improperly and that is not something to take lightly. God says that He will not hold anyone guiltless that misuses His name.

And sometimes I think the unbelievers and scoffers and mockers say it on purpose just to get under Christians' skin. But they'll have a lot more to answer for one day than just getting under somebody’s skin.
