In 1857, the British soldiers looted the city of Delhi, in retaliation against the Indian Mutiny. Mirza Ghalib’s house was also not spared. The soldiers took away all the valuables in his house, leaving him with just the clothes he was wearing and a mattress to sleep on.

They were especially angry as they could find no precious jewels in his house.

Mirza Ghalib’s wife was a shrewd woman. She had anticipated the attack, and sent the jewels and other valuables beforehand to Kale Sahib.
