Where Did the Opium Come From?

British conquered Bengal and this is where the opium came from. The Indian peasants now became a part of the story of the opium trade with China. The market for opium increased and expanded and the demand shot up. Supplies were needed to keep up with the demand.

Keeping up with this growing demand was not easy. The cultivators had to be forced to grow the crop as most of them were unwilling to do so. There were many reasons for this.

1. Many cultivators owned no land. They cultivated land after taking it on rent or on lease, which meant high fee and the cultivators found it difficult to pay it.

2. They were unwilling to use their fields to grow poppy. The poppy plant grows well in fertile and well-manured fields that were used to grow pulses. The farmers or cultivators could not afford to shift this crop to areas which were not fertile.

3. A lot of care and nurturing was required for the opium crop as it was a delicate plant, and the cultivators had to spend long hours nurturing it. This would leave them with no time to take care of other crops.

4. Cultivation of opium under the colonial masters was very unprofitable as the government paid a very low price to the cultivators for the opium they produced, It was unprofitable for the cultivators to grow opium at that price.
