The writer heard two mine workers talking about school. The writer was working with these workers in a mine. The mine workers were talking about a school in Virginia. The writer was very much impressed about the school, even more than he liked school uniforms. He heard that poor people were taught there, for trade and industry. On hearing this, the author decided to go to that school.

The writer (Booker T Washington) heard fellow miners talk about an unusually good school that was somewhere in Virginia. The author at that time was also working in the coal mine. This school at that time was known as Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. The writer became exceedingly inspired and motivated to enroll himself at this school for education. He describes the entire incident in his famous autobiographical book ‘Up From Slavery’.
