Shale comprise soft and finely stratified rock of sedimentary in nature that is created from mud as well as from clay and can be split to fragile plates.

Petroleum gas and crude petroleum which are hydrocarbon resources are reserved below a shale cover of a great amount of depth or thickness.

Hydrocarbon resource base, India detected  six basins as areas for shale gas extraction :

Cambay ,

Assam-Arakan ,

Gondwana ,

Krishna Godavari onshore ,

Cauvery onshore,

Indo-Gangetic basins.
