The step wise process by which a mature ovum(n) is produced from a primary oocyte(2n) is called oogenesis.

It is the female equivalent of spermatogenesis. It produces female gamets, which eventually takes part in fertilization.

Oogenesis occurs inside the ovary which situates inside a female organism.
