In most aquatic organisms, such as a majority of algae and fishes as well as amphibians, syngamy occurs in the external medium ( water), i.e. outside the body of the organism.

In most of Aquatic organism such as majority of algae and fishes as well as in Amphibians (frog) , syngamy occurs in the external medium such as Water i.e., outside the body of organism. This type of gametic fusion is called External fertilisation.

While in many terrestial organism belonging to fungi, in a majority of plants (Bryophytes, pteridophytes, Gymnosperm and Angiosperms) and in higher animals such as reptiles, birds, mammals, syngamy occur inside the body of organism, hence known as Internal-fertilisation.
