Scientists continue to be utterly mystified as to how the Universe exists after taking the most precise measurements yet of the magnetism of matter and antimatter.

According to the Standard Model of Physics, the Universe shouldn’t be here because after the Big Bang, equal parts of matter and antimatter were produced and they cancel each other out. Matter and antimatter are identical except for their opposite electrical charge, so whenever they meet, they should annihilate each other.

Researchers have been hard at work looking for any difference at all between protons and antiprotons that would help to explain how our Universe didn’t just destroy itself the moment it was born.Now, physicists in the BASE collaboration at CERN have been able to measure the magnetic force of antiprotons with “almost unbelievable” precision – and they didn’t find anything.

“All of our observations find a complete symmetry between matter and antimatter, which is why the universe should not actually exist,” said Christian Smorra, first author of the study, in a statement. “An asymmetry must exist here somewhere but we simply do not understand where the difference is. What is the source of the symmetry break?”
