The veld grasslands of Africa occur in the most southern portion of the continent spreading through the political boundaries of South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

Sweet veld

1. Occurs mainly in the lower laying frost free areas
2. Rainfall usually range from 250 – 500 mm per annum
3. Most grasses remains palatable through out the year, provided that the veld is in a
4. good condition.
5. Is sensitive to overgrazing during the growth season
6. Recovers quickly after been grazed, provided that growing conditions is optimum.

Sour veld

1. Is found at higher altitudes with lower temperatures
2. Rainfall 625 mm per annum and more
3. Produce palatable grazing with a fairly high nutritive value during the growth season
4. Can withstand overgrazing but resulting to lower production
5. Recovers slower from utilisation than sweet veld

Mixed veld

1. Intermediary form between sweet and sour veld
2. Characteristics similar to that of sweet veld - known as sweet mixed veld
3. Characteristics similar to that of sour veld - known as sour mixed veld.
