Major Burton was assassinated at The Brij Raj Bhawan Palace Hotel. It was located on the banks of the river Chambal near the city of Kota, Rajasthan , India. He belonged to the 40th Bengal Native Infantry and was posted in Kota in the year 1844 and stayed their with his family for the next 13 years.
On the fateful day of 15th October 1857, a huge crowd approached the palace. He assumed that the crowd were localities and had come for some assistance or wanted to discuss an issue, he came out but was soon fired upon.
He soon realised that he was in trouble, ran back inside the palace along with his two sons and hid in the upper room. He thought that the guards would be able to resist the large crowd before help to arrive. But soon he and his two sons were captured by the Indian army and were dragged to the central hall where they made to kneel down before shooting them.
