Where was the first school founded by Gandhiji, in Champaran, located? A)Bhitiharwa B) Motihari C) Madhuban D) Jasaulipatti
Answers
Answer: Motihari
Explanation: In 1916 during the 31st session of the Congress in Lucknow Gandhi came across Raj Kumar Shukla, a farmer from Champaran, who requested him to travel to Champaran in order to see the real sufferings of the tenant farmers in the hands of the Britishers.
The Britishers forced the farmers of Champaran district (Bihar) to undertake indigo cultivation. They were not adequately compensated for the above crops and any refusal on their part for not engaging in the cultivation of the indigo crop would invite heavy taxation. This resulted in famine as other crops were hardly cultivated leading to the misery of the farmers.
During his stay in Champaran he soon realised that the Britishers were able to exploit the farmers because they lacked both awareness and education. He soon took up the task of setting up organizations for the upliftment of the people.
In 1917 he launched three schools. The first school started near Motihari, followed by one in Bhitiharwa and the third in Madhuban.
