Salanio says in his dialogue that if like his friend Antonio , he had business ventures overseas , all his thoughts and attention would be with his ships at sea. He would always be uprooting a blade of grass to see if the wind is blowing in a favourable direction or not. He would peer into the maps minutely to search for canal and ports to shelter his ships in case of an unfortunate circumstance at sea. and any object that might make him scared of his ships at sea would make him sad.

He would be looking carefully in maps for ports, piers and roads and he would call his ships back if he think something misfortune can happen. He would be
plucking the grass to know in which direction the wind is flowing.
