Stimulation develops mental ability and senses, that is the ability to perceive, smell , feel, etc.

Cognitive development is associated with the development of mental ability, perception, etc.

So, stimulation causing cognitive development is true, as proved by many researches. But, the extent of development is not limited to cognitive development only, as the development effects are seen over complete body and for life of the child or person. Better control and coordination of mind and body is also a result of cognitive development.

Yes, I agree with the given statement:

Stimulation is important only for cognitive development

Stimulation helps a child to improve their memory, retention power, ability to respond, attention power etc.

This will help the child to utilize their thinking and imagining power, thereby enabling them to attain specific milestones earlier than children of the same age.

Thus stimulation is crucial for cognitive development.
