Ideally, a country should have a proper democratic system in place for efficient governance. Next, it should embrace a multi-party system and have unqualified respect for universal adult franchise. Further, the country should have a non-partisan and fully independent judiciary, an equally independent election commission, a neutral police force and an equally neutral and strong military. Most of all, the country should have a fully functional parliament and legislatures.
The election commission must call for periodic elections and hold them in a free and fair manner. Thereafter, as in India, governance should be carried out by the union and state Governments. However, discrimination against people on the basis of their caste, creed and language ought to be totally eliminated; neither should pandering to any social group be legally permissible. More and more focus must be given in improving the lot of the poor people, industrialisation must be given a boost and so on. More emphasis must be laid on creating economic opportunities for people as opposed to maiming them by doling out freebies.
Infrastructure, healthcare, sanitation and education must be improved without much ado. Improvement in supplies of potable water across the country should be taken up on a war footing.
Neutrality and improved efficiency of the police force should be an immediate concern. If the lawmakers hesitate to take suitable action, the law courts should immediately remedy the situation.
