m not sure that photons can be said to “take up space” in any useful sense, and they have zero (rest) mass. Indeed, zero-mass particles all scoot around at c, and have a similar “not really taking up space” problem, if it's a problem (and maybe only photons qualify).

Space itself has zero mass, although saying that it takes up space is like wandering through a hall of mirrors (fairground, not Versailles).

In a different sense, nothing contains “chemistry” except human minds, and by extension, some of their tools, like text-books. Some of those are quite small and light, and that goes for the text-books too.
