Areas in the coastal regions are most vulnerable to a tsunami. In India, this would translate into the eastern coastal plains in Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and the western coastal regions in Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. The following measures need to be taken to minimise damage from tsunamis:

Structural measures

i) Construction of shelters and plantation of mangroves and coastal forests along the coastline.

ii) Developing local knowledge centres to share information, impart training and provide communication.

iii) Development of tsunami detection, forecasting and warning centres.

iv) Retrofitting vulnerable structures to enable them to withstand tsunami and constructing new structures like power stations, warehouses, highways, storage tanks that are required to be located on the coasts with the same objective.

Non- Structural measures

i) Strict implementation of coastal zone regulations.

ii) Mapping the coastal zone for hazards, vulnerability and risk assessment at village level.

iii) Building capacity among local people and administration to deal with any disaster.

iv) Developing tools and techniques for risk transfer, launching public awareness campaigns, training local administration in warning and evacuation techniques, generating awareness among fishermen, coast guards and other officials.
