The Gujjars and Bakarwals use the Alpine grasslands of the lower Himalayas i.e. the Siwalik range of the Himalayas. They use this portion of the Himalayas due to the following reasons:-

1) There is Alpine vegetation at higher altitudes.

2) Alpine vegetation includes silver fir, junipers, pines, birches, etc.

3) The Gujjars and Bakarwals are nomadic tribes who are herders. The Alpine grasslands provide a good grazing ground for their herds.

4) They follow seasonal change. In winter, they stay with their herd in the low hills of the southern Himalayas while in summer they cross the Pir Panjal pass to enter the Kashmir Valley.
