Charles Wood was the the President of the Board of Control of the East India Company. In 1854 he sent the "Wood's Dispatch" to that times interim Governor General Lord Dalhousie.
In this Dispatch he said
(1) There should be an educational department in every provinces.
(2) Universities should be built in the big cities like Bombay, Calcutta and Madras.
(3) In every district at least one government school should be opened.
He also said that every educational institution should teach English and Mother-tongue. He made English language an integral part of our education system. This shows that our today's education system is pretty much influenced by the "Wood's Dispatch".
