Basic structure. Modelled after the Westminster system for governing the state, the union government is mainly composed of the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary, in which all powers are vested by the constitution in parliament, the prime minister and the supreme court.

The executive in each province is called the executive council and is headed by the Premier. MECs are accountable to their legislatures in the same way as the cabinet is accountable to the parliament.
