Answer:

  • The life cycle of a butterfly takes place into four stages: egg, larva, pupa in chrysalis and adult. The entire process of transformation of caterpillar into a butterfly takes place inside the chrysalis, also known as pupa and lasts for about 10 to 15 days from a four week long process, in peak of the summer. During the winters it takes much longer.
  • The metamorphosis process starts with spinning of a little silk pad around the body of butterfly and hangs themselves upside-down the tree branches or creates a silk hammock. Its inside this chrysalis that the interesting process from a wingless many-legged creature turns into a beautiful colored wing flying creature takes place.
  • The caterpillar uses the digestive juices to digest its own body. Some tissues or group of cells known as imaginal disc, are left, which uses a protein-rich juices to transform into wings, antennae and other body organs.
  • The chrysalis cannot excrete out its waste products, which them accumulates inside and converts into nitrogenous wastes that can be seen under the butterfly as it emerges.
  • Once all the body parts are formed fully inside the chrysalis, the color of the chrysalis starts to change and the butterfly’s colorful patterns can be seen through it.
  • After this the butterfly slowly breaks open the chrysalis with its folded wings and other body parts, then pumps blood into the wings and flies away as a fully formed butterfly.
