We can recognize a person from his voice on telephone without seeing him on the basis of the unique quality or timber of his voice.
The quality or timber is the characteristics of musical sound which enables us to distinguishes between the sounds of same pitch and loudness produced by different musical instruments/singers.
The quality or Timber of a musical sound depends on the mixture of frequencies present in it.
Loudness:
Loudness of sound depends upon the amplitude of sound wave. If the sound waves have a small amplitude, then the sound will be faint(or soft).
on the other hand ,if sound wave have large amplitude, then the sound will be loud.
Pitch:
Pitch of sound depends upon frequency of vibration
Sounds of low frequency are said to have low pitch whereas sounds of high frequency have high pitch.
