Answer:

The two major groups that were involved in the World War I were the following :

Allies : Britain,

Europe (France,Italy),Russia, later joined by U.S.A.

Central Powers : Austria - Hungary,

Ottoman Turkey, Germany

World War I was fought between

1914 - 1918 . It was the outcome of continuous revolutions and colonialism of Balkan region after 1871 between the above mentioned nations. It ia also called as 'first industrial war'.

The following were the cause of World War I :

The Balkan region comprised the modern day Greece, Macedonia,Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Croatia,Bulgaria,Albania, Serbia, Montenegro and Romania.

i) Balkan regions were occupied by Ottoman empire. But due to romanticism revolutions, protest for independence started. The inhabitants of this region were broadly referred as ' Slaves '.

ii) Ottoman Empire could do nothing to keep them peaceful. Thus Balkans disintegrated from Ottoman empire.

iii) The new independent states were jealous of each other. They wanted to to expand their territories at the cost of each other. This started wars within these states and this made this region very conflicting.

iv) After their disintegration many other European powers started to occupy these states and wanted to make them their colonies. But these states used history to define their independence and proved that they were independent earlier but were colonised by foreign powers.

v) Big powers like Britain, Russia, Austria - Hungary fought with each other for naval and military bases, trade, colonies etc. in this region.

All this led to series of wars which finally led to World War I.

NOTE : Greece was not involved in Balkan wars because in 1832 ,due to Treaty Of Constantinople of 1832, Greece was recognised as an independent nation from Ottoman Empire.
