Major Trading Power
16th Century Trading power Nation:
In the sixteenth century, Europe emerged as a great trading force.
The English competed for a piece of the Baltic trade, but they were well behind the Dutch for a long time. Baltic trade was booming in absolute terms. The number of ships sailing across the Sound separating Denmark and Sweden was 795 in 1497; 100 years later, the toll collectors recorded 6,673 ships. Over the same century, the percentage of Hanseatic ships increased from around 20% to 23–25%; the Germans had not yet been forced out of these eastern seas.
