The five components of evolution are:

=>nonconstancy of species (individuals are unique)

=> all organisms descent from common ancestors.

=> gradualness of evolution.

=> multiplication of species (diversity)

=> natural selection.

New gene variants (i.e., alleles) are produced by random mutation, and over the course of many generations, natural selection may favor advantageous variants, causing them to become more common in the population. CORRECTION: Evolution occurs slowly and gradually, but it can also occur rapidly.

Natural selection acts on phenotypes, but evolution changes allele frequencies. Natural selection can only act on traits that have a genetic basis. Individuals that survive and reproduce, or who reproduce the most, are those with alleles and allelic combinations that best adapt them to their environment.

It occurs over many generations, applies to an entire population, and happens at the genetic level are the accurate descriptions of evolution.

  • The process of evolution involves changes in a species over the years which assist their survival.
  • Such changes occur at a genetic level as the genes recombine or mutate in new ways which are further passed on to the coming generations.
  • Not one individual but an entire population gets affected as these changes occur in their bodies.
  • These changes happen over generations and take hundreds of years.
