Acyl chlorides like acetyl chloride (CH3COCl) instantly form a white precipitate of silver chloride (AgCl) on treating with an aqueous solution of silver nitrate.

CH3COCl + H2O = CH3COOH + HCl

AgNO3 + HCl = AgCl + HNO3

Acetyl chloride is readily hydrolysed to acetic acid and HCl on contact with water. The chloride ions from HCl react with silver nitrate to form insoluble silver chloride as a white precipitate.
