The reason that a series DC motor is often used for traction is the large torque it can develop at low speed. At low speed, the back-e.m.f. developed in the armature is very low. This means that the armature (and field) current is very high, and only limited by the series resistance of the field and armature windings.

Electric traction system

It has many advantages over non-electric traction systems such as more clean and easy to handle, no need of coal and water, easy speed control, high efficiency, low maintenance and running costs, etc.
