In human beings, to transmit signals from one neuron to another, certain chemicals are required known as neurotransmitters. These chemicals are released at the end of an axon to transmit the electrical signal to the receptor neuron.

Different types of neurons requires different stimuli for transmission. For example, in case of sensory neurons, light, heat and chemicals from inside and outside of the body is needed to transmit the signals.

Additionally, the main ions that are included in the transmission are sodium, potassium and calcium ions.
