The British had introduced the usage of rifles in the army. In order to use it, the soldiers had to bite the end of the cartridges. These cartridges were said to be greased with animal fat. Hindus and Muslims regarded this as an attempt to pollute themselves and their religion. This produced the spark for the first war of independence.
