The gas in the atmosphere which traps the heat rays reflected by the earth is called Carbon Dioxide . It's chemical formula is CO₂ . It is a very harmful gas and is released by living organisms as a result of the process of respiration .

The reflected rays thus get back to Earth's surface causing global warming . It and eventual rise in average in temperature of the earth due to increased concentration of carbon dioxide . If it is not controlled , all ice on Earth will soon melt .
