Limewater as Indicator of Carbon Dioxide Gas. Description: Carbon dioxide gas from a cylinder is bubbled through limewater and calcium carbonate solid is formed causing the limewater to become cloudy.

The formula of lime water is given by Ca(OH)2 i.e. calcium hydroxide. When carbon dioxide reacts with lime water, limestone [CaCO3] is formed which is an insoluble ppt. Due to this insoluble ppt., the solution appears milky.
