Mineralised matrix (containing Calcium) gives tensile strength and hardness to a bone.

  • Initially bone matrix is generated by osteoblast cells.

  • This bone matrix is un-mineralized and un-calcified and known as osteoid.

  • Mineralisation of bones happens in presence of vitamin D (calcitriol) such that there is preposition of calcium in the matrix.

  • Deposition of adequate amount of calcium makes the bone hard and gives tensile strength.

Inadequate mineralization of the bone matrix due to nutritional deficiencies might lead to rickets (in children) and osteomalacia (in adults).
