Electron affinity is the change in energy when one mole of neutral atoms in its gaseous form gains one mole of electron to form a negative ion.
Example :
O (g) + e → O-(g)
N (g) + e—-> N-(g)
The electron affinity of O is lessthan of N atom. Electronic configuration of N is 1s2 2s2 2p3 and of O is 1s2 2s2 2p4. N has a half filled electron sub shell and the addition of an electron is not favoured.
