THE IMMEDIATE CAUSE of the July 14th outbreak is simple. After two years of poor harvests July is the month when bread is at its most expensive : old grain is gone the new one not yet available. Paris having no water pipes people needed to buy their water and in the middle of the summer one needs a lot of it.
