The attack by the Third Estate on the Bastille State Prison on 14th July 1789 and making the prisoners free sparked the French Revolution. Bastille was a symbol of tyranny and autocracy. Its demolition marked the end of the despotic rule of monarch in France.
The angry mob had made negotiations for the release of the prisoners but their negotiations were turned down. They became restless and stormed the prison and released the prisoners. This incident created a chaotic situation in Paris and was regarded as the catalyst of the French Revolution.

Answer:

A popular insurgency culminated on July 14 when rioters stormed the Bastille fortress in an attempt to secure gunpowder and weapons; many consider this event, now commemorated in France as a national holiday, as the start of the French Revolution.
