Mg is more stable because it is neutral atom while Mg^+2 to be stable will loses two electrons readily.

Mg is more stable than Mg+2 because

The easier the metal gives up its valence electrons the more reactive it is. Mg has a lower total ionization energy to get to its stable Mg2+ configuration than aluminum's total ionization energy to get to its stable Al3+ configuration. Again, aluminum is the more chemically stable metal.
