Answer:

How, one should also ask, might it be ‘unnatural’? Is there any aspect, any process, any chemical, physical, or biological interaction that does not conform to the same basic governing principles as every other interaction on earth?

If you answer ‘no’ it means that you have been unable to identify an aspect of a pond that violates the basic governing principles of all physical, chemical, and biological processes. In this sense you have failed to identify something that is ‘unnatural’.

But now you’re confronted with another problem. Does ANYTHING violate those governing principles? Are people and societies subject to them as well? Do principles with respect to gravity or electromagnetic forces not apply to people and society? Well, of course they do. So now the remaining question becomes: Is there anything that is unnatural?

My view is that we apply these terms, ‘natural’ and ‘unnatural’, in a manner that allows us to separate humans and human inventions from things that seem to be independent of us. But I contend that this is separation itself is the primary aspect of humanity that is ‘unnatural’. Every other aspect of our lives is subject to and conforms to those same governing principles. To me, there is no such separation. I’m just not sure why we want to make such a distinction in the first place.
